Watch Your Speed!
More roadways in Salida are being certified for radar, and the C.H.P.
are getting more radar units. The 4 roads that have been certified for
radar enforcement include, Broadway, Covert, Finney and Kiernan, which
are all 25MPH through town. Murphy, Toomes and Pirrone roads are also becoming
radar certified at 45MPH. Warnings will be given through August.
Is the City of Modesto Witholding Water From Salida?
It was reported at the latest Salida Municipal Advisory Council
that the City of Modesto who last year bought out the Del Este Water Company
has threatened the community of Salida by with holding water from new developments
if the community doesn't become annexed with Modesto. There are a few things
that are being researched, first, is this legal for the City of Modesto
to do? Secondly there are other avenues the community of Salida can take
to get around this obstacle. Thirdly, is this a bad thing? What is your
opinion on this matter? Do you think it's a good idea for this to happen
to limit the growth of Salida and keep the community as it is now, un-incorporated?
Or is this being used as a weapon of political blackmail? E-mail
your comments and we'll post them on our Community
Comments page! In the meantime a committee is being formed to look
into official township for Salida.
Salida has shown up quite a bit in the local paper (The Modesto
Bee). Here are some of the articles that have een featured in recent editions:

the dangers of common household products and how to dispose of them properly.
July 1998
There were about 20 people at the July M.A.C. meeting (7/9/98).
Under the Crime report from the Sheriff's Dept. there were about 5 home
burglaries, 2 burglary suspects are still at large. Their descriptions
are 2 white males in their 20's possibly in a older model silver Oldsmobile
Cutlass. C.H.P. reports that accidents among residents in Salida are up.
They have been having problems with motorists not paying attention to the
rules of the road and right of way. Two main problem areas are : People
driving too fast on Broadway, and U -Turns on Salida Blvd. particularly
down by Pelandale. The C.H.P.'s are planning on expanding their Community
Policing program to other areas within the County. Some roads should be
radar approved by next month and are hoping to have the radar trailer in
Salida sometime this summer.
Stump Stealing = Big $$
Some of the other crimes that were brought up that can be prevented
include stealing walnut tree stumps from orchards. These stumps are now
required to have paperwork when transporting them. The wood from the stumps
are shipped to Germany where they are made into dashboards for luxury import
cars. Value of each stump ranges in the thousands of dollars.
The next print edition of the "Salida Newsletter" published by Bob Reibold will be combined as July/August and will not be distributed until sometime in August.
Jim Duval of the Salida Redevelopment Project was at the meeting and talked about the improvements planned for Salida Blvd. and Broadway. Waste water run-off facilities for those areas was mentioned as well as for other areas.
2nd Week of September will be a open meeting for residents to attend for Future Search, which is part of a Fannie Mae improvement program that is being looked into for the older downtwon area of Salida.

Vision.
June 1998
Did you happen to catch our community officer Dep. Dave Brown on TV? Channel 14, KAZV broadcast a local program focusing on community policing called Local Issues, Politics and People. It was aired over the weekend of July 27-28th. KAZV is our ONLY local TV broadcast station which focuses on the local issues of Stanislaus County and surrounding communitites. Channel 14 is not on cable and can only be recieved through an antenna.
The Stanislaus County Sherrif's Department will be hitting the streets of Salida on bikes soon. It was announced at the June M.A.C. meeting that the Community Officers, Deputy Dave Brown and Deputy Mike Gasior would be serving some of their patrol time on new bicycles being purchased by the Sherrif's Office.
With summer finally here, kids are out of school and playing sports outside. Not only should you be very cautious while driving through residential neighborhoods, but stay aware of small children running into the streets. Parents, please make sure if your child is outside, they are properly supervised and are wearing the correct protective gear for whatever activity they are engaging in. Bike helmets are required for younger bicyclists. The California Highway Patrol will be patrolling area neighborhoods and warning residents about the potential traffic dangers of having portable basketball hoops in the street in front of houses. Residents who have these basketball hoops in the street will be notified to move it onto their driveway.
New Speed Limits
You may have noticed a couple of new signs in your neighborhood.
The speed limits on a few roads have recently been changed. Kiernan Road,
west of the freeway has gone down to a 25mph zone to just past Toomes Rd.
Toomes Rd. which had been 55mph(unposted) is now 45mph and is NO PARKING.
Signs will be going up within a few months on Toomes Rd. and along other
streets that have been designated No Parking.
